My vegetable garden has been a disappointment the last few years. I've planted things in the ground, in pots, tried different spaces of the yard, bought really pretentious dirt, but in the end, I only get a few measly tomatoes and a handful of pathetic peppers.
But my flowers are killin' it.
I buy flowers from McTighe's Garden Center each year around Memorial Day and spend the long weekend planting things. I plant impatiens and zinnias because they do well in partially shady areas. Both of these types of flowers will fill out and cover the whole space making like a flower blanket. It's lovely.
This year I caved and put down some mulch because my little flowers were taking a beating from the rain. I actually hate mulch. It smells awful and the way some people add it to their landscaping just looks so stupid. But, I felt that the mulch would help support the stems, so I bought some cypress mulch which didn't smell like ass.
Here is the flower garden post mulch. For the first week, I couldn't stop thinking that it looked like we tossed bbq pulled pork all over the garden, but I've gotten used to it and the flowers have spread out so it looks nice now.
